If there’s anything I know about my generation is that we value independence, freedom, and the ability to express ourselves verbally and visually. We are budget conscious, but are willing to pay the extra buck as long as we think it’s worth it and feel good about the story behind our purchase. We respect genuine social responsibility and honesty from the people we buy from. With that said, I still can’t figure out why we aren’t buying local. Nothing against corporations…well not really, but one would think as a socially awoke generation we would do more to support our local economy and communities. We are a generation that constantly expects the businesses to do better by humanity and do the right thing, yet we turn to large corporations and manufacturers to get what we need. Guess what millennials, our local small businesses are already on top of it.
By supporting local businesses we are making investments in our local talent, designers, creators, and makers. Local businesses make creating a genuine connection that much easier and stronger because we actually get to meet the people behind the ideas. When we talk they actually listen. When we ask for help we get a human response rather than a cold shoulder. We are not sent to some out of touch call center in goodness knows where. We are able to connect personally. Personal relationships are at the foundation of every business. A business with strong connections with their clients and customers often become pillars of our communities. When we take care of our businesses by purchasing and spreading the word our businesses take care of us by providing jobs, being socially responsible, and giving back to our communities through action and/or by giving.
Local businesses also provide awesomeness by being unique whether you are comparing the experience or the products. They tend not to follow the cookie-cutter approach with products and services that we are so used to seeing in department stores and stores connected to big brand names. From fashion to stationary local businesses have a flair for turning heads, reminding us of what we are missing, and bringing us home, again. It’s amazing that people will spend so much of their hard earned money to wear and showcase brands that can be found practically everywhere. When shopping locally chances are that purchased items will more than likely be one of a kind, if not a handful of a kind. Buying local gives our communities a chance to give us an exclusive shopping experience personable, community driven, and not your average day in the store. Before running to a department that carries big names try hitting up local spot you’ll be surprised at what you will find!
